Money Matters
Ghana’s currency is the Cedi which comes in denominations of GHC 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins come in denominations of 1 GHC and also 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p & 1 pesewas. Foreign currency can be freely exchanged at any Forex Bureaux in the country.B Banks: Opening hours: 8.00am – 12.00pm ; 13.00pm – 16.00pm Credit Cards: The most widely accepted credit cards are Visa and Mastercard. These cards are accepted in major hotels, restaurants, banks and businesses . Your card may be used for payment at most all airlines, leading hotels and major supermarkets. One important note, before you leave home is to ALWAYS contact your bank or credit card company and tell them you wish to use your card in Ghana. However be cautious when using your credit to avoid fraud. There is a limit to how much you can withdraw at an ATM, and it is usually less than $100 (in local currency, of course). Bring cash to pay for your purchases. For cash advances, it is safe to use your credit card at a bank, inside or at the ATM. Travellers Cheques: All banks and Forex Bureaux accept Traveller”s Cheques although the rate of exchange may be slightly lower than for cash transaction. |
Voltage
Voltage in Ghana is 220/240 volts like in Europe (110/120 volts in North America). Most laptop power adapters (and camera battery chargers) can convert voltage from 110-240 volts to power your computer. Any other electrical equipment using 110/120 should be dual voltage, have a switch or you will need a “step down” voltage converter. Plugs in Ghana are the same as used in Great Britain (large 3 pin - type G) so you will probably need an adapter to plug your laptop into the power outlet. They can be found in Ghana but ensure to buy quality products. Some adapters will accept many types (USA, Europe, etc.). You may need to purchase a “step down” transformer. Some appliances have a 110/220 switch, which will work fine, all you need then is a small plug-in adapter that will accept your plug type. A “step-down” transformer can be purchased locally for about $10-12USD; and a plug in adapter will cost about $1USD. |
Water
Accra tap water is safe to drink but it is advisable for visitors to use bottled drinking water which is available for sale in hotels and supermarkets. Brushing teeth with tap water however is fine.

Tipping
Tipping is permitted in hotels, restaurants, etc. It is rarely added to the bill. Whenever it is not added the quality of service should dictate your generousity to the waiter, taxi driver, porter, tour guide, etc.
